{Thrift It Thursday} Plunder Palace

April 10, 2013 in Thrifty Thursday

Wow, do I have a GOOD one for you today! Welcome to Thrift It Thursday – Plunder Palace Edition!

A few weeks ago, Big Guy and I headed home to his parents’ house for the weekend. Big Guy’s Mom had planned a fun afternoon for she and I… complete with an auction and thrift stores!

Our day didn’t go entirely as planned, but we improvised and had SO much fun!  …and one place was such an adventure that I have to share with all of you:

Plunder Palace

601 Front Street  |  Ironton, Missouri  |  (573) 546-7172  |  Facebook

This place SCREAMS American Picker from the road. By this time, we were totally free-styling. (Big Guys’s Mom made a remark about us “free-styling” as we left Plunder Palace… Yep, she’s my kind of lady!)

Plunder Palace

What’s not to love about that awesome collection of signs?!  (and of course the smiling guard dog!)

Plunder Palace

City Hall? Hmmm… But did you see that sweet rock collection on the right above?

Plunder Palace

Packed full?  That’s an understatement. The shelves were so jam-packed you couldn’t even BEGIN to see it all!

Don’t you just love this old bike. I’m not sure you could have wrestled it out of that aisle without taking down an entire row though…

The next two photos were snapped in side-rooms. IN-SANE! You could spend ALL day at Plunder Palace and you’d barely even scratch the surface.

You know there has to be some hidden gems buried deep down at the bottom of that pile!

We had such a great time that day. I snagged few items shopping in the stores… but my FAVORITE find was at the auction -

EZToter

How AWESOME is this green EZ Toter metal caddy?! It has the perfect patina vintage graphics. Too. Fun. I can totally picture this as a coffee table organizer or phenom caddy in a craft room! { For Sale Here }

I also snagged this vintage oil can – oiling can

I can’t believe how heavy it is. They definitely don’t make them like they used to!  { For Sale Here }

Have you found any fun {unexpected} thrift shops lately?! I think I’m just a sucker for the thrill of the hunt.

{Thrift-It Thursday} Goodwill Outlet St Louis

March 27, 2013 in Thrifty Thursday

I wanted to share a FUN shopping excursion from earlier this year. I love thrift store shopping – probably more than most people – and this trip exceeded my expectations!

Goodwill Outlet St Louis

3728 Market Street   |   St. Louis, MO 63110   |   website

If you live anywhere near St. Louis, you’ve probably heard of the Goodwill Outlet. It’s like Supermarket Sweep meets American Pickers…. with a whole lot of JUNK in the way. The Outlet is the last-stop on an unwanted item’s way to recycling/trash. When you donate an item to your local Goodwill store, it will be offered for sale for a set amount of time. If it doesn’t sell during that time period, it’ll be boxed up and sent to the Goodwill Outlet… and that’s where the fun begins….

Big Guy and I were headed downtown for a Saturday night event so we swung by the Goodwill Outlet St Louis just to check it out. Let me tell you… It’s a cultural experience! There were people everywhere and the parking lot was packed. They roll out new bins every few minutes and the people go CRAZY.

Items are tossed in giant, rolling blue bins. Really no rhyme… no reason. You better come prepared to dig! Next time I’ll be armed with a pair of gloves, a bottle of hand sanitizer and maybe even a can of Lysol!

I’ll admit it – I made the Big Guy nervous on more than one occasion as I tried to wedge my way into the madness so I could snag some “fresh” items rolling onto the floor in a new bin. It was comical – you’d think they  were bins full of money with the way those people were scrambling! One bin held a large cardboard box with aging styrofoam and a light fixture inside. You pay for items by the pound – not per item – so people like to discard packaging and just hold onto “the goods”. Well, admidst the chaos, someone tried to yank the light fixture out of the box. The disintegrating styrofoam exploded into the air like a snow globe and the group of people were showered in tiny pieces of white foam. I only wish I had it on camera – it was magical… in that thrift store Disney sort of way.

I watched bin after bin roll out, laughing at the bargain blitz and keeping my eyes peeled for something worth snagging…

and then I saw them…

Several wooden yardsticks being nudged around in the bottom of a bin as people scrambled and sorted. I grabbed the big guy in a vintage-loving-frenzy and told him I neeeeeeded them. It’s a good thing he was there!  With his go-go-gadget arms and big-guy height, he was able to weasel his way into the pack and snag every. last. one. of them!

Forgive my crazy hair… I’d been to battle in that store!

Can you believe it?! SIX of them!!! Many of them are printed with local St. Louis stores. Oh happy day!

Big Guy found himself a wooden spoon to use as his “shovel” in the bins. He cracked me up as he poked items out of his way and lifted potential purchases from the bin with the tip of the handle.

When you finish your shopping, you simply take your goodies up to the register to be weighed. They have large scales that you can roll your cart right up onto or smaller counter scales if you’re just buying a few things here and there.

All in all – an AWESOME shopping trip. I’ll DEFINITELY go back… but next time I’ll have gloves!

Curious about what I found? I snagged some great vintage and antique finds!  A few of them are currently listed in my Etsy store, but you’ll have to wait to see them all. I know… I know… I’m holding out on you. :-)

Vintage Lockers – Before & After Makeover

February 19, 2013 in Building and Repurposing, Furniture Makeovers, Thrifty Thursday

Finally! They’re finished!  My vintage lockers have officially been MADE-OVER. Woop woop!

If you recall, I fell head over heels with these lockers at an auction last year. Yes, head over heels. As in swooning. As in bid like a mad-woman and gave everyone the “don’t-bid-against-me” evil eye. There were a couple that ran the bids up, but in the end, I was victorious. Booyah.

…and then I had to figure out how to get them home. Why yes, yes I DID drive home several miles with them hanging out the back of my SUV… tied in place with leather dog leashes. Hey – I had to get creative.

What’d I use for my vintage lockers makeover?  Quite possibly my new favorite spray paint for rusty metal makeovers!

I reached out to the good people at Krylon to see what spray paint they’d recommend. They responded lickety split and were even kind enough to send me some paint to try out.So what’d I use? (Oh wait, I already asked that didn’t I… I’m long-winded, what can I say!)

Krylon Rust Protector in Oil Rubbed Bronze

People… let. me. tell. you.  This stuff was great! It went on evenly and dried in minutes. 8 minutes to be exact!

I gave the lockers a good cleaning before I painted. This included sweeping, spraying down and even a wire brush to rough up the chipped paint and rusty areas. Then I painstakingly removed ALL of the numbers and tabs from the locker rack. What a pain. Did I mention it was about 30 degrees outside and I couldn’t feel my fingers? Yeah that part definitely didn’t help. :-)

I have a feeling these lockers had a rough life. They had some stout rust patches, but Krylon was up to the task!

So how many coats? Ummm I’m not entirely sure. I got so excited about the Oil Rubbed Bronze that I went buck wild… plus it dried so quickly. By the time I finished a lap around the lockers the paint was ready for another coat. That’s my kind of spray paint.

All in all, I’d give this stuff 4 out of 4 gold stars… or maybe I should make them bronze stars. (har. har.)

Before we look at the finished product, let’s have a couple quick reminders of what these vintage lockers looked like before:

…and now <drumroll>, the AFTER photos!

…and here’s some side-by-side before and after shots to give you an idea of just how far they’ve come:

Well? What do you think?  Personally… I LOVE the dark metal popping against the shiny silver locker baskets and numbers.

…and what’s a Crafted Niche post without some Pupper Glamour shots? Of course Emma and Quinn had to get their muzzle shots.

Thanks for stopping by! I have some more GREAT projects to share in the coming weeks.

…and let me tell you – THIS girl is SO excited to have a working laptop again. It’s tough to edit photos and write posts with a laptop that shuts off every four minutes. Just take my word for it!
