Nightstand Makeover – Furniture by the Numbers
January 31, 2013 in Bedrooms, Building and Repurposing, Furniture Makeovers, Gettin' Crafty, Thrifty Thursday
Time for another Thrifty Thursday!
The Big Guy celebrated a birthday last month and I thought it might be fun to MAKE something for him. (Does this seem like a recurring theme for me?)
I mulled around a couple ideas… and then it hit me. Brilliance. Perfectly HIM.
Today… you see the outside. …and in my next post you see the INSIDE!
…because as well all know…
It’s what’s inside that counts, right?
It all started with Craigslist. (another recurring theme for me!) I saw an ad for a piece of furniture (shocker). Turns out it was close to where The Big Guy lives… so I sent him a text to see if he could go pick it up. …and yes. He picked up his own birthday present and didn’t even know it. Yeah… he’s pretty nice like that.
Anywhooo… once I got my hands on it, I got to work! I turned this nightstand from a shabby Craigslist Castaway to a Front-and-Center HANDY piece of furniture!

Want to know how I got there? Well… I’ll explain:
First I painted him (the nightstand, not The Big Guy) head to toe in Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Paris Grey.
Then I fired up my trusty $5 projector. I grabbed the same transparency I used for Christy’s Pottery Barn Knock-Off Numbered Wall Art and lined it up. Using a pencil, I traced the outline of the numbers ever so carefully.
I sat (for a couple hours) painting inside the lines with a homemade chalk paint.
I decided to go with super simple hardware. Busy-looking drawer pulls would have competed with the numbers. Better to keep it simple!
After everything was dry, I gave it a solid sanding all over. For some reason it felt too perfect and I wanted it to have a little more edge… so I used my sanding block to knock off the paint on some of the edges and corners.
Final to-do – Give it a good wax and buff!
I was so excited to give it to him that I totally forgot to take any good “beauty” shots. Sorry ladies, no perfectly staged pictures of this one to share. Instead, you get to see it the same way HE did for the first time – With his beer cake on top!
When all was said and done, I thought he looked pretty darn nice… but like I said earlier – it’s what’s INSIDE that counts. Stop back by and see what I did on the inside to make this one-of-a-kind nightstand perfectly unique for The Big Guy.
Remember – it’s what’s INSIDE that counts!
Update – I spilled the beans! Click Here to see the INSIDE of the nightstand!

Oh my goodness I LOVE your nightstand! Seriously, I am coming to steal it from you right now!
You inspire me!
Jaime
Why don’t I just make you one? Then we can have same-sames.
thanks for stopping by – you always put a HUGE smile on my face!
This is very cool. I love the color, the numbers, the hardware.
I want a $5 projector too.
My Mom was bummed I didn’t buy all the projectors they had! I somehow stumbled on a yardsale in the middle of nowhere. The lady’s husband had been to a school auction and purchased several projectors and rolling computer carts. I only took one projector, but she’s right – I probably should have snagged them all. They would have been the best gifts ever!
The nightstand turned out wonderful. Love the grey color and the numbers. It gives it a vintage industrial feel to it. Such a great idea for a birthday gift.
Thanks for sharing,
Suzanne
Thanks Suzanne! I’ll admit – I was nervous he’d take one look at it and think I was completely crazy-town. I think he likes it though… especially after seeing the inside.
That is just fantastic! Can’t wait to see the inside! But now I remember why you haven’t posted in almost a MONTH! You have “The Big Guy” in your life! I had forgotten! So did he love it?
Hahaha too true
…and I think he DID like it!
How could he not love this. It is really cool.
Thanks Ann!
That turned out great! yet another project that reminds me that I really need a projector–one of those things I had no idea I needed until I started reading so many blogs
Too true Gretchen! I didn’t necessarily NEED it when I found it… But for $5 I couldn’t pass it up!
I love this! They color is perfect. I wish it would warm up here so I can work on some furniture. Just too dang cold!! It really is a wonderful piece

Oh my gosh love this! Maybe if I were to put the numbers of our anniversary on there, my guy would stop forgetting our anniversary? Yea, that still probably wouldn’t work. SUPER CUTE!!
Hahaha I love that idea Cassidy!
Now that is caaute! It must have been hard painting over the edges of the drawers like that. I’d love it if you linked this to my new linky party, “What We’ve Accomplished Wednesdays.” It is live right now.
Have a great week!
Deborah

Pinned. Great job. I love how you took that outdated, yet still in great condition, nightstand and gave it new life. I love the colors and the numbers. Saw you on the House of Hepworth’s link party. Have a great day.
What a great transformation! You took something dated and made it look so fresh and modern. Love it! So glad I saw this featured at the Shabby Nest.
