Reason #1227 Why I LOVE Auctions – Vintage Lockers
October 21, 2012 in Auction Adventures, Building and Repurposing
Auctions – you never know what you could find! Could be good… could be a FLOP. Today… today was good. Reaaaaaallll good.

Vintage Lockers Good! Be still my heart. I love these lockers. LOOOOVE them.
It was a chance encounter. They were hanging out under a tree while I casually browsed the rows of auction stuff. I wasn’t looking to find someone something… I was just stopping in to see what I might find. And then I laid eyes on them in all their shiny goodness.
Be cool Dana.
Keep yourself together.
Don’t look desperate.
But inside… inside I wanted to squeal, and dance, and throw my arms around them, shielding them from the eyes of everyone else.
So what did I do? I stood RIGHT in front of them, “casually” playing on my phone. In reality – I was uploading photos of them to Facebook while my heart raced, counting down the minutes hours until they’d be up for bid.
When the auctioneer finally directed his attention (and the bids) my way… my heart was about to jump out of my chest. I stood RIGHT NEXT TO THEM. Hahaha Pretty much laying claim before I’d even bid. When the auctioneer started at $10 I laughed and said YEP!… and the number rose from there. I just kept shaking my head yes… daring someone to bid against me. THOSE LOCKERS WERE GOING TO BE MINE – one way or another. Don’t TEST me old man that wants to put them in his SHED! I’ll come after you like a spider monkey!
When it was all said and done, they. were. MINE. Allllllll mine. I had about 5 people approach me, asking what I planned to do with them. On the outside, I was smiling and victorious… on the inside, I was shaking and still a nervous wreck. It’s a little scary how bad I wanted them. Ha!
I couldn’t wait to get them home and snap some pictures for you.
How GREAT would they look if I painted the stand in black or oil-rubbed-bronze. Those silver baskets would POP!
Does anyone have any recommendations for a good, tough paint? It’ll need to stand up to the metal-on-metal sliding with those baskets.
…and how amazing would they look on casters?!

Aaaaahhhhh I LOVE THEM! I can’t wait to fill those baskets with all sorts of crafty DIY goodness. Only time will tell if I let them settle in permanently. For now, I’m head over heels.

So the next time you see a listing for an auction or spot a sign driving down the road – CHECK IT OUT! I had no idea these lockers would be there and I’m SO glad I gave it a shot!
…and stay tuned to see how these lockers shape up!

awhhhhh I LOVE them too! I would SO love to go to auctions with you…. Reason #1227 why we should be neighbors.
there is the perfect lot next door to me…. want to move in? we can go to auctions together all weekend! ahhhh but anyways what a great find girlie!
Jaime
SUCH the truth! We really do need to be lake neighbors. Sigh…. crafty lake neighbors with fire pits and hot glue guns. Watch out world!
These are siiick!
I love them and I am super jealous right now. They look like the ultimate mudroom accessory.
I would look into a powdercoated enamel finish for the shelves, an industrial machinery painting company can do it and the finish will be ultra durable. I’ve heard of people finding these services for a steal too. I would paint the frame in my favorite color: turquoise.
I can’t wait to see how they evolve.
You had better start bringing a taser to these auctions, just in case the bidding gets intense. Keep those old men at bay!
Congratulations on this find, Dana!!
Ooo that’s a great idea Jenny! I just googled and found a couple of painting companies to try. That would definitely be a more hardy solution that spray painting myself!
Dana,
You are one lucky girl! I love them too. But for me I would leave the original paint and all. I would just wax the metal and be done. Whatever you do it will be fabulous !
Smiles, alice
ACK! I’m in love, too! They are fabulous! But ‘cmon girl, fess up….how much did you pay?? Can’t wait to see what you do!
I love them too! You are the luckiest woman in the world!!
W.O.W. So…what was the final bid that won them?
LOVE THEM!!! Love then I tell ‘ya.
Spider Monkey… ah ha ha ha ha.
Bliss
My heart would have been beating out of my chest too! Those are the most awesome lockers! Lucky you!! I would leave the wood natural or maybe stain it darker, but I’m sure whatever you do will be beautiful. Have a great week!
Deborah
So jealous! I was in the exact same situation as you a little over a year ago… at an auction and desperately wanting the same exact item! We got in a bidding war unfortunately with a professional and he had much more money at his disposal than us and we lost to him. I’m still sad over it! My fabric stash would have found the perfect home in those lockers!! I’m so happy it worked out for you!
I would be freaking out too! These are awesome! best colour and texture and all around look! I am jealous…;)
Those are seriously amazing! Congrats on getting them!
I really enjoy your blog! You have inspired me more then my husband can stand… I always got something goin on ;0)
By the way, great find!! (The spider monkey thing was a good laugh)
Although I wish those lockers were mine – I know you would have attacked in spider monkey mode so glad I wasn’t there!
Love them – they would look amazing with casters!
Kelly
Lady, I like the way you think. They are fantastic!
