Guest Bath – Beachy Rustic Bathroom Update
August 6, 2012 in Bathrooms, Building and Repurposing
I worked my butt off this weekend on my guest bath. I was officially SICK of having only one bathroom with a mirror. You see – my motivation to work on this space comes in waves. I may only go in that room once a month… so it’s not exactly top of mind. For some reason, Saturday it became my mission!
Here’s a reminder of what the space looked like when I moved in:

Sorry about the photos… when I did my first walk-through of the house I never dreamed I’d be blogging about it 2 years later. Check out those flippin SWEET plastic bathroom towel racks. You know you wish you had them.
It’s the world’s SMALLEST bathroom. Ok… maybe not a world record holder, but still – it’s pretty dang small. Somehow they managed to squish in a shower, vanity and toilet… into what couldn’t be bigger than 5′ x 5′. Seriously tiny. I’ve used the shower ONCE and let me tell you – that. thing. is. tight. …and not a super cool, street-cred type of tight… I’m talking keep-your-elbows-tucked-as-you-raise-your-arms-to-shampoo-your-hair tight. ….and absolutely-impossible-for-a-girl-to-shave-her-legs-in-tight. Yup…. it’s THAT small.
So a quick run down…
- My Mom and I installed a tile floor.
- I got vicious and crow-barred the shelves out of the nook above the toilet. (I use the word ‘shelves’ lightly)
- I created an inspiration board to try to get… well… inspired.
…and then it sat in waiting… Until this weekend!
I’ll blog more details in the coming days, but here’s a fun, fresh look at what the space looks like now:
I haven’t exactly “staged” it… It’s so small that I think I’ll have to keep the decor to a minimum so guests have room for their things when they come to visit. There’s nothing worse than having zippy counter space to stick a bag o’ toiletries!
I’ll eventually replace the mirror, but for now, this one will do. I’m tossing around the idea of a crisp white or maybe a brushed nickle frame mirror. Thoughts? The faucet needs to go… as does the light fixture. One step at a time though! The funky three-pronged hook on the wall is from Ikea and the blue ball jar was a thrift-store find for TWO BUCKS! (If you haven’t noticed – I love ball jars. Remember my three-jar kitchen light and recent jar lamp?)
I’ll give you the scoop on how I did the plank wall and info on the paint I used for the vanity in a day or so. Sorry… I’d spill ALL the beans tonight, but it’s already 10pm and this girl needs her beauty sleep. Plus – there’s still the space above the toilet to reveal. Woop! Stay tuned!

ohhh my goodness I LOVE what you have done here! I ADORE that hook! I am going to have to pick one up from ikea like right now! And the wood behind the mirror… PERFECTION. You rock my friend!
Jaime
Jaime you officially win for QUICKEST comment ever. I heart you!
I agree with Jaime! That hook is awesome!
Thanks Jessica! So glad you popped over!
Wow! Looking good!
Wish I were close enough to get to an Ikea for that hook!
Thank you! I bought the hook probably a year ago when I was last at an Ikea. It’s been waiting in my closet for a purpose!
That planked wall is THE BOMB! I love it. It is going to look so cool when you change the mirror and fixtures. I can’t wait to see it!
What a beautiful transformation! Love the wood.
Love what you did above the basin with the planks – I have a similar “niche” which I had no clue as to what to do – you’ve given me an idea. (I always say my master bedroom bathroom is so small you can hardly change your mind in there – nevermind anything else!)
Haha I love that Linda! And it definitely applies to my bathroom too.
LOVE it so far!! Holy cow. Wanna come update my bathroom?!
Oooh, this is fun! I remember this from the beginning! The planks are fantastic…canNOT wait to see the rest!
The perfect look for a small space! I love the color of the wood and I too love ball jars! I think that jar is the perfect color pop for that space. I thought that hook to the right of the mirror was the light fixture at first, so hanging lantern-type lighting (for outdoors) came into mind as an idea for indoor use in that space. Anyway, have fun completing your project.
Currently in wood wall pinning mode, and yours fit’s right in, I love it.

It looks great already! I love the wood! And yes, I do want your plastic towel racks… mine falls off all the time so maybe it wouldn’t scare me so much if it was made of plastic.
I would love if you shared this at my Throwback Thursday party. I hope to see you there! http://www.hubbymademe.com/throwback-thursday-no-6/
This looks great. I have a small bathroom that this would look great in! Might have to try it =)
Popping over from Live Laugh Rowe! Love the planked wall! I want to do an accent wall in my son’s room like this….pinning it as inspiration!
ooooo You should totally do this in your son’s room!
Oooh, I’m loving the distressed wood. I have small bathrooms and this is a brilliant way to make it look bigger. I think I would keep that mirror if I were you and white wash it. Love the ball jar too!
