Ballard Designs Inspired Spool Side Table
October 13, 2011 in Building and Repurposing, Furniture Makeovers, Living Room
Confession… I was originally going to post about this project next Friday, but I just couldn’t stand to wait that long! I was too excited to share it with each and every one of you. Fair warning… this post has a LOT of pictures. I tried to keep them small, but if you’d like to see them larger, just give them a click and you can see more detail!
For the longest time I’ve looked at spools and thought they could be vamped up to make pretty fabulous side tables. I’ve seen oodles of them outside as patio tables, but I wanted to give it a whirl for an inside side table. When I saw this Ballard Designs $200 spool table I knew I had to try.
I’ll confess. From the get-go I knew I wasn’t going to achieve quite this look. I snagged a spool for $5 from Habitat Restore and hauled it home.
Broke out my good ol’ handy dandy sander and went to town. This probably took me 20 minutes tops to go over the top and bottom pieces and all the vertical slats.
At this point I gave it two coats of Minwax Special Walnut. While the second coat was drying I headed to Orschlens to pick up some supplies for a different project. …and you’re NOT going to believe the deal I found!
Yep… that price sticker definitely says $.10 a foot!!!!! Originally $1.24, I snagged 150 feet of this 3/4″ rope for a whopping $15. SCORE! Originally I was looking for something a bit softer looking, but I absolutely couldn’t turn down this deal.
When my second coat of stain was dry I applied two thin coats of Minwax water-based Polycrylic. So far I’ve been really pleased with this product. I used it on my Butcher Block Island Makeover earlier this year and the finish is holding up REALLY well. I’ve even had to scrub the heck outta it after accidentally spraying it with adhesive spray. Whoops! But the good news is now we know the poly is some durable stuff!
…but I digress. Back to the spool. Focus Dana! (This is how much of my stories go in person too……. lots of sidenotes…. and LENGTHY!)
SPOOL. Got it. I’m focused.
Stain. Check. Poly. Check. …speaking of…. check out the awesome wood grain in the vertical boards. LUV it. I actually half-considered not wrapping the spool with rope just so I could show off those boards… for about 2 seconds.
Also, take a look at the hole in the side at the bottom below. Remember that…. it’s going to come in handy later… which is funny because at first I was really bummed it was there!
Time to wrap the rope! I used my brad nailer/stapler with 1″ staples to affix the rope snugly to the spool. I started by pushing a couple inches of rope in the hole at the bottom and stapling it just outside the hole…
Every 2-4 times around I’d push the rope down and pull it tight before firing another staple into it. You can see the tip of my stapler in the photo above. Ladies… if you haven’t used one before, it’s a MUST have. I have a brad nailer and a finish nailer…. and love them both to pieces.
I made it a point to shoot two staples in every time just to be sure I had a nice tight hold of the rope. I angled them a bit and tried to send them through towards the edge of the rope in hopes of really sinking deep into the wood.
Almost done! I should mention that I was SO dizzy while wrapping this silly thing. Clearly I was never a ballerina or an ice princess…. because just walking circles around this spool with the rope was making my world spin. I won’t lie… I sat down twice to steady myself.
When I got to the top I TRIED to use my knife to cut the rope. Turns out it’s not sharp. AT. ALL. As in you probably couldn’t slice your finger even if you tried. Instead, I broke out my cheap-o miter saw from the $8 yellow miter box set at Lowes. That thing is handy to have around. (side note… don’t groan… that cheap-o miter saw is also good for trimming low branches!)
….and here she is… all finished up and waiting to come inside.
….and here are a few (too many) shots of it sitting in the living room!
….and my cup of hot chocolate is sitting on her as I type this post! Well, what do you think of my $20 spool side table? I know it’s more rustic than Ballard Design’s version… but I’ll take a $20 table over a $200 out of my pocket any day!
…and as always, if you decide to make your own spool table I would LOVE to see your version! Send me a link to your post or even email me a photo – craftedniche{at}gmail{dot}com Who knows… maybe we should start featuring some of them HERE to help get people’s confidence and creativity going!
Have a great weekend everyone!

Oh my gosh I love this! You did a great job & I love the stain you used. I would love to have a table like this in my house… hum….
aww Thanks Sarah! I was actually thinking of picking up a couple more spools and buying the rest of the rope at Orschlens. I was pondering making a couple more and selling them on Craigslist. Sounds like it might be worth a shot!
This is a WOW idea and you did an awesome job! I think you should definitely consider doing a few for Craigslist! I’d also be interested in featuring you on BeautifullyCoastal.com. Let me know what you think
Thanks Lesli! I’d be honored for you feature Crafted Niche!
Hi Dana, Thank you so much for letting me feature your great DIY tutorial! You can find it here… http://beautifullycoastal.com/diy-projects-crafts/diy-ballard-designs-spool-table-tutorial/
Smiles,
Lesli
I built a tiki bar and surfboard bar now time for 2 spool tables-I use stain then Spars Marine varnish-they use it on teak boats a couple of coats lasts fforever. Will post pics when I get done
I like yours more than Ballard’s version! It looks awesome! What a deal on that rope!
SUCH a deal. I really did luck out on the rope. Just one of those dumb luck things, but I’m ever so grateful!
Love, love, love it…I want one! I have a column in my house that I was considering wrapping with rope but I haven’t decided yet.
Thanks so much for the nice words…glad you like my blog! I wish I could stay home all day and craft…but don’t we all?
jamie@sewrockin.com
Jamie that sounds like a great idea with your column. If you were worried about committing to the full column, what if you just did a smaller section towards the top? Maybe a 12″ band a bit below the ceiling? That could give you a little bit of texture and then you could live with a bit while deciding if you wanted to do the full column. Just a thought, but I say GO FOR IT!
This is SO GREAT! I drive by a construction area on my way home everyday and I always see these old giant spools. I’ve had this same idea in my head for over a year now…so glad to see it and know it can be done!!! I’m gonna snag one some day soon! Love your blog!
Lucky! That’s perfect… you could wait it out until you saw EXACTLY the spool size you were looking for.
I just saw that in the Ballards catalog at the Drs. office yesterday, and I must admit I tore the page out (which I never do) to take home and try to duplicate it myself. Great minds think alike I guess. Good job!
Thanks! Would love to see a photo of yours if you decide to make one
L.O.V.E.!!!!
Love it!! You are amazing!!! How do you find time for all of this fantastic stuff!!! I can only long to be as creative with my time as you are with yours. Perhaps when I retire?! Well done!!!
I just discovered you through Funky Junk. I love your table! Good job…and thanks for walking us through the project…Now I need to find one of those spools!
Dana, you have such a great eye for things. Well Done!! You inspired me to award you with The Versatile Blogger Award. I invite you to stop on by http://igottacreate.blogspot.com/2011/10/bloggy-love.html to check it out when you get a chance. Have a great weekend!

Will do Cathy! Thanks for the invite!
That looks fantastic! Great job!
Thanks so much!
Totally awesome! You inspire me. We are now using pallet wood to put up walls in our cabin/masterbed room.
Keep up the good work.
I was thinking of doing a small wall in my guest bath with pallet wood. Would love to see how yours turns out!
omg that sounds awesome, do share the finished product! I have always thought of doing something with pallets….show us show us show us!
How awesome! It turned out fabulous!
OMG! That looks awesome!! You are so talented! I wish I knew how to work with wood like that! I need to take a wood shop class:D
You’d be surprised how easy it was. This project was nothing more than a little sanding and staining followed up by some staples. Easy peasy. You’ve got this!
I ADORE THIS! I really wanted to make this a couple weeks ago when I was in Round 2 with CWTS on Sew Dang Cute Crafts, i just couldn’t get my hands on one and had limited time too. I love this project. SO CUTE. I totally want to make them with string or bakers twine to look like spools of thread and make them seats for my crafting space. Anyway. LOVE IT. Shared it on my COM-FB page.

Thanks for spreading the word Jen!
OMGosh! this is absolutely beautiful and it just looks amazing in your living room. Great Knock-Off!! Would love it if you would link this up to our Rockin’ link party this coming Friday, http://www.rocaandcompany.blogspot.com. Come and show off what you got. Hope to see you there….
Remember…YOU ROCK!!
LOVE it! You did such a good job and the stain is perfect. Even if it’s not an exact match to the Ballard table, I like the look and shape of yours better. And for $20, you just can’t beat that!
Wow! This looks fantastic!! I’m so jealous. We have these cable spoons at work, maybe I’ll have to snag one….
Do it!
Awesome stuff! Thanks so much for sharing -found you at Sugar Bee. We’ve totally got to try something like that soon.
You did an awesome job. I think yours has more of an industrial look.
I think it is amazing, Dana! I love the dark stain you used – what a great DIY project!
I love your version, way better than the Ballards one actually! Very cool! And I really like your denim blue walls, nice!
Thanks Kimberly! I was nervous when the paint went on the walls… Scared it would make the space feel too small… but thanks to vaulted ceilings and skylight it still has plenty of space and light.
What is the name and brand of the paint on your wall – I love it? And your table is amazing!! I am going to make one for my husband to have as a side table for his recliner.
This is gorgeous! You did an amazing job. Love how it turned out and it looks great in your room
Love your spool! It is awesome. My husband sells wire and cable for a living so there are tons of these spools at the warehouse. I’ve always wanted to do something with them but thought they looked sorta tacky until I saw your post. Way to go. I love it!
Holy Smokes! I love this!!!! Honestly, how cool. I really want to make one to put by my sewing table that lives in our family room!
That would be so cute. Great idea!
Inspiring jealousy throughout the blog world, that is what you have done! Take a bow. You deserve it.
Nice work! I have several spool lying around waiting for me to do something with them (the hubs is an electrician…I go straight to the source LOL). I might have to try something similar.
that looks awesome! i love your version better!
Thanks Cassie!
You have done a wonderful job! The make over has made a HUGE difference. I think I’d like one in my house!
I think it looks just as good as your inspirations piece – it just has it’s own nature.
This truly is beautiful, I think I like yours better then the $200 one. I have been looking for ideas for side tables in our spare bedroom, I am pretty sure I found it! Thank you! <3
Perfect! Would love to see a picture of yours when they’re finished! I think it could be fun to white-wash one or even paint it and then distress. So many possibilities!
Great job! I love it. If I ever find a spool I am getting it, so I can make one too.
Love this – it turned out wonderful!! Great job!! Sharing at the party tonight~Thanks for linking up at Feathered Nest Friday!
Thanks Courtney! I really appreciate that!
I want to make one of those tables soo soo bad!! I think they would look perfect on the front porch!

I love it! I loved the one in the catalog when I first saw it. I think I’m going to have to hit my Restore again, I LOVE that place!
Thanks Amanda. I went back to Orschlens hoping to buy more 10cent rope… but they were sold out. Sad face!
I like the more rustic look of your table and the darker stain of the wood! You did a GREAT job!
Thanks so much Ashlyn
Your spool/table is better than the inspiration picture. I love the dark stain and the darker rope. Job well done!!

Love this!!!! Just showed this to my husband (an electrician) and, SURPRISE, he said this is what he gets all his wire on several times a week! So he’s going to bring one home tomorrow. So if any of you know an Electrician or are gutsy enough to just call a local electrician to ask about it- Cheap is great, but Free is better!
I like yours better too. Just gorgeous!
I love how it turned out and the different texture it brings into the room! Thanks for sharing with us at Show & Share!

This is awesome! I have some plain ones I’ve been using as side tables in the family room that I got for free from one of my husband’s jobs, but this is even cooler!
PS: You know those cheap three-legged side tables with the glass top? The glass top is the perfect size! Just FYI.

Shut the front door! Donna! Funky Junk Interiors! At Crafted Niche?! You just made my weekend. Thanks so much for featuring my post Donna. Too incredibly sweet of you.
It is a great look. Did you happen to cover the holes in the top of your spool? I have one that someone gave me. It is bigger than yours and not as tall. It was refinished at one point, but needs done again. This would make a nice addition. Thanks!
Hi Beth – No I haven’t covered the holes, but you could definitely get a piece of glass to sit on top. The holes haven’t caused any problems for me so I’ve left them as is.

Another fabulous project. Why did I not find this blog sooner!!!
There’s a place up the road that has loads of these spools but they’re about massive because they are industrial wire reels. They’d work for a patio table though!
Thanks for the idea, yours has come up trumps.
Well done on such a fab blog, I’m your latest member.
Just found you today through Burlap & Denim. I LOVE this side table. My husband would actually love this too! Thanks for posting how you did it too! Now I’m on the hunt! LOL

Love this idea! Now I don’t want to go to work, I want to go out and find me a spool. My living room is nautical, but more like old coastal style so this would look great.
I don’t blame you. This stuff is way more fun!
I recently got three of these exact same spools at Home Depot…for free!!! I cannot wait to do them for my nautical theme at my shope in Stratham, N. H.
